GhostCycle #19

50th St & Brooklyn Ave. NE

I was riding East on NE 50th Street passing by the U-dist Safeway on my right. I was in the right hand lane obeying traffic laws to the best of my knowledge. I didn't have any lights though. A car was coming up fast behind me and there was no where to go to get out of the way. No bike lane, no break in the curb. I was nervous because from the sound, the car was not slowing down or moving around me. I tried to hop up on the curb to the sidewalk. Curb was high and I *think* some part of the vehicle clipped me as I was moving out of the way, knocking me up and over the front tire and handlebars. It happened so fast I'm not sure this is entirely accurate. I could have just been nervous and not landed the bunny hop correctly, as it was a lateral hop at a fairly good speed. Being young/stupid/in shock I got right up and walked my bike home (handlebars bent, brake lever snapped off). I didn't go to the doctor for a week (no health insurance at the time). Helmet saved my skull (maybe my life) for sure. The styrofoam was cracked when I went down on my right side. Six weeks later I was back on the bike and I have been regularly riding to work/for pleasure ever since!
